What is insomnia?

Insomnia is one of the most common sleep complaints. It is an inability to fall asleep or stay asleep, resulting in lethargy and fatigue throughout the day.

Insomnia is considered to be a disorder of hyper-arousal, and is sometimes linked to psychiatric, physical and/or medical conditions.

Roughly one-third of adults have temporary symptoms of insomnia, but as many as 10 per cent of adults are likely to have long-term, chronic insomnia.
